Ensuring safe interactions between law enforcement and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) is crucial. Recognizing this need, IDD Safe has developed the “Safety and Police Encounters” certification program, launching in February 2025.
This comprehensive certification is tailored to equip the IDD community with the knowledge and skills necessary for confident and secure interactions with police officers. The curriculum encompasses essential topics, including:
- Understanding Police Roles: Clarifies the duties of law enforcement within the community.
- Effective Communication: Teaches clear and respectful dialogue techniques during encounters.
- Safety Protocols: Emphasizes the importance of staying calm and cooperative.
- Rights and Responsibilities: Educates individuals on their legal rights and expected behaviors during interactions.
The program is structured into skill units, each focusing on specific aspects of police encounters, allowing participants to progress at their own pace.
Accessibility and Flexibility
Designed with accessibility in mind, the course is available across various devices—computers, tablets, and smartphones—ensuring that learners can engage with the material anytime, anywhere. The self-paced nature of the program accommodates diverse learning styles and schedules.
Collaborative Development
IDD Safe collaborated with the Dale Rogers Training Center (DRTC) and LearningQ to create this program, integrating insights from both IDD professionals and law enforcement veterans. This partnership ensures that the training addresses real-world challenges and fosters mutual understanding between individuals with IDD and police officers.
