News 9 Highlights IDD Safe’s Police Encounter Training

We are thrilled to share that News 9 recently featured IDD Safe’s innovative “Safety and Police Encounters” training program, highlighting our commitment to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to navigate interactions with law enforcement safely and confidently. See the story here.

Founded by retired Oklahoma City police Lieutenant Stan Campbell, IDD Safe addresses a critical need within the IDD community. Inspired by personal experiences with his nephew on the autism spectrum, Lt. Campbell recognized the importance of equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to handle police encounters effectively. This led to the creation of a program emphasizing the “Three Cs”:

  • Calm: Maintaining composure during interactions.
  • Communicate: Engaging in clear dialogue with officers.
  • Comply: Following lawful orders to ensure safety.

In collaboration with the Dale Rogers Training Center (DRTC), IDD Safe has successfully conducted in-person training sessions, benefiting over 100 individuals since 2022. Building on this success, we are excited to announce the launch of our comprehensive online course, “Safety and Police Encounters.” This 10-week program offers:

  • Expert-Led Online Sessions: Participants engage with real-life scenarios guided by experienced instructors.
  • Interactive Quizzes: Reinforcing understanding and retention of key concepts.
  • Flexible Learning Pace: Allowing learners to progress at a comfortable speed.
  • Certification: Awarded upon successful completion, acknowledging the participant’s preparedness.

The online format ensures accessibility, enabling individuals nationwide to benefit from this essential training. As highlighted in the News 9 feature, the program is designed to “teach class participants about the three Cs,” ensuring they are well-prepared for any encounters with law enforcement.

We invite individuals, caregivers, and organizations to enroll in the “Safety and Police Encounters” course. Join us in our mission to promote safety, understanding, and mutual respect between the IDD community and law enforcement.
