IDD Safe, in collaboration with the Dale Rogers Training Center (DRTC) and LearningQ, is thrilled to announce the launch of the “Safety and Police Encounters” certification program, a pioneering national initiative. This program empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to navigate police encounters safely and confidently. Set to launch in February 2025, this program reflects IDD Safe’s mission to foster safer, more inclusive communities by equipping individuals with IDD, their families, and law enforcement with essential tools and knowledge.
The course is composed of five badges and 25 distinct topics, covering essential aspects of law enforcement interactions, safety protocols, and understanding individual rights. Available online, participants can pre-register and access materials for three months, with an optional ten-week live instruction component led by experienced trainers. This program builds on IDD Safe and DRTC’s successful partnership, which has provided hands-on training to over 100 individuals since 2022.
Co-founded by retired Oklahoma City police officers Lt. Stan Campbell and Sgt. Rob High, IDD Safe is committed to creating a supportive, safety-conscious environment for individuals with IDD. As the program reaches a national audience, it stands as a milestone in IDD Safe’s goal to raise awareness around de-escalation and effective communication in police encounters.
