We’re still feeling the impact of such a meaningful evening spent with our community during Autism Awareness Safety Night at DRTC.
IDD Safe partnered with the Oklahoma City Police Department, the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma, and DRTC to host a special event for autistic individuals, those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and their families. Together, we created a safe, welcoming space where attendees could connect with local law enforcement, ask important questions, and engage in hands-on safety activities designed with their unique needs in mind.
At IDD Safe, our mission is simple but vital: we’re here to promote police encounter safety and empower individuals with IDD through education, awareness, and preparedness. Our goal is to reduce fear and misunderstanding on both sides of the badge—helping individuals with IDD feel more confident in emergency situations, and helping law enforcement approach those encounters with greater empathy and understanding.
Events like this bring that mission to life. Families left with helpful tools and resources, officers gained new insight, and we all walked away with a deeper sense of connection.
A huge thank you to our partners and every family who joined us—we are so grateful to do this work alongside you.
Let’s keep building safer, more inclusive communities—together.
